The environmental overview is a publication that discusses the state of the environment in Estonia and the pressures affecting it. The overview collects the most important topics related to the environmental sector in order to provide as broad an understanding as possible of our surroundings. Earlier environmental overviews were published in print every four years, in 2005, 2009, and 2013, and contained a large number of illustrations, tables, maps, and references. After 2013, the environmental overviews have also been compiled as map stories and environmental indicators (see more details below).

The topics covered in the Environmental Overview are generally divided into two parts: the socio-economic background and the environment. The environmental sector encompasses a very wide range of topics, so the overview aims to remain concise and present only the most essential information. For readers interested in a specific topic in more depth, the references at the end of each chapter can be helpful for further research. Each major topic also highlights the relevant legislation regulating it. Since the natural environment does not recognize national borders, these are often international directives and agreements, but the overview also provides a good summary of national goals and legislation. The information contained in the publications can be used in various ways – for personal education, planning various activities and developments, and in environmental research and studies.
