Overview
The Estonian water environment includes both groundwater and surface water, including seawater, whose condition maintenance is a shared responsibility for all of us. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water, while rivers, lakes, and the coastal sea are an important part of nature and the living environment, providing habitats and opportunities for water use. Water quality and availability are influenced by both natural conditions and human activities — ranging from everyday water use to the impacts of economic activities.
Water management plans connect all these perspectives into a whole, offering an overview of the status of water bodies, the main pressures, and planned measures by watershed to ensure a balance between water use and protection.
Monitoring water conditions, maintaining its good condition and using water sparingly is essential to ensure our country’s sustainability for future generations.
