Estonian Nature Information System (EELIS) is a national database that collects, manages, and provides information about nature and water-related data in Estonia. For example, it offers an overview of protected areas, water bodies, various nature values, and related legal restrictions.
What kind of data is in EELIS?
- Legally regulated objects – for example, protected areas that come with restrictions established by laws.
- Nature values that are important but do not always involve restrictions such as:
- primeval nature objects;
- list of islands;
- cultural heritage sites in nature.
How is the data updated?
- The database is updated continuously:
- when new legal acts are adopted;
- when nature inventories are carried out;
- when new information about objects becomes available.
- Restrictions are added only in coordination with the Ministry of Climate and the Environmental Board.
-
Other valuable nature-related information (e.g. from research institutions) may also be added if necessary and approved.
Important change since 6 June 2022:
- The Environmental Register Act has been repealed.
- EELIS is now the official database under the General Part of the Environmental Code Act (§ 395).
- When citing data from EELIS, please use: “EELIS (Estonian Nature Information System), Estonian Environment Agency” and always include the data reference date.
