Overview
The objective of national environmental monitoring is to obtain an overview of the environmental state of the country and its long-term changes, ensure compliance with the obligations of monitoring the state of the environment arising from international agreements and national legislation and assess the impact of the implementation of national action, development and management plans on the state of the environment and its changes. National environmental monitoring is carried out based on a long-term national environmental monitoring programme.
The national environmental monitoring programme is divided into 12 sub-programmes (in Estonian):
- Meteorological and hydrological monitoring
- Ambient air monitoring
- Groundwater monitoring
- Surface water monitoring
- Marine monitoring
- Biodiversity and landscape monitoring
- Forest monitoring
- Integrated monitoring
- Radiation monitoring
- Seismic monitoring
- Soil monitoring
- Support programme
More detailed descriptions of the subprograms can be found on the Environmental Agency's website.
More detailed information about the conducted monitoring and results can be found in the Environmental Monitoring Information System (KESE). KESE is a database that consolidates environmental status data collected under the national environmental monitoring program and related environmental research projects. The monitoring results stored in the KESE information system are accessible to anyone (in the role of a monitoring enthusiast) without logging in.
